Newark Day- Saturday June 2

This weekends weather is supposed to be beautiful.  Low 70s and sunny.

Saturday is the new Newark Day. Newark Night has been getting too difficult to handle for the Newark authorities with crime so they are making it during the day to try to avoid that.

It’s a hectic time, so be prepared to wade through a sea of people and walk a lot. But it’s pretty cool to be able to walk down the middle of Main Street and not get a jaywalking ticket!

Lots of good food available for purchase and shopping on Main Street with bands playing along the way.

It runs from 12-5 Main Street, Newark. Happy adventuring.

Summer Jars

I started writing this blog because I was worried about hearing from LittleM, “What are we going to do today Mommy?”.  Now that we are steps away from summer, that is even more on the front of my mind.  I found on the From Weeds to Wishes blog a fantastic idea that I can’t wait to create with LittleM tonight!

Summer Jars

This is a fantastic idea for the kids to have immediate access to a ton of great ideas to combat the “I’m bored, let’s watch tv” phenomenon that will immediately take over the second that summer starts.  One each popsicle stick is an idea of an activity to complete together.  The blogger, Cristi, gives a great list of ideas on her summer list, I have added a few others of my own locally to Delaware because of different memberships that we have to local attractions.

Our Summer list

5 dollars at dollar store

Blow bubbles

Camp in the backyard

Catch Bugs

Feed the birds

Finger Paint

Fly a kite

Go on a hike

Go to the Zoo

Have a baseball catch

Have a Happy unbirthday

Have a paper airplane contest

Have a photo walk

Have a Picnic inside

Have a Picnic outside

Have a Water fight

Have lunch at McDonalds

Learn to draw something new

Make a craft

Make a fort

Make homemade bread

Make Homemade Lemonade

Paint a picture

Plant something

Play Hopscotch

Play in the Sprinkler

Play with a Frisbee

Play with Ice

Roast marshmallows

Roll down a grassy hill

Scavenger Hunt

Sew something

Sidewalk chalk

Snuggle up for Storytime

Soccer Game

Stare at the clouds

Take the dog to the dogpark

Throw a football around

Try a new park

Visit Longwood Gardens

Visit the Farmers Market

Visit Winterthur

Walk the dog

Watch a movie with popcorn

Water balloon fight

Since I just found this idea, I’m not totally sure how we will set our jars up.  I’m not even sure if we will use jars.  Please go to the From Weeds to Wishes blog for complete instructions and I will post what we did as soon as we have completed our project.

The “Play With Ice” idea comes from a new blog that I follow called The Imagination Treewritten by a woman named Anna.  This will take some planning because Anna had the kids go around the house and outside to find things to freeze into ice blocks.  After the containers froze, she used that opportunity to talk with the kids about how materials change (water to ice and back again) and worked with motor skills because she had them try to get the objects out of the ice with hands, forks, and any other tool they thought to try.

I hope this gets your creative juices flowing for summertime ideas.  I can’t wait to get started myself!

Life Isn’t Fair so Keep Moving Forward

I’m having a hard time getting inspiration to post lately.  I’m having a hard time getting the energy to exercise to continue my life change (which I have lost 27 pounds for already). I’m having a hard time keeping myself emotionally together, even though I should be jumping up and down because we are less than 3 weeks away from the end of the school year and the start of the glorious summer.

This is because I am still learning at days away from 32 years old that Life Isn’t Fair. We have an illness in my family right now that is not going to go away, just continue to progress.  My husband called me last night to let me know that he unexpectedly lost his job.  We suck at financial management.

How do I explain to my beautiful daughter who is almost 4 what is happening?  I can’t keep things from her.  She clearly sees that things are changing.  I don’t want her to learn at 4 years old that life isn’t fair.

I am afraid at the changes that are coming.  But I do appreciate and cling to the support of friends and family, no matter how far away they are.  And that we had already paid for our pool membership for the summer.  At least we have that going for us.

So, I continue to keep it together. I plan and organize things the best that I can to focus on getting things done.  My new motto (stolen from “Meet the Robinsons”) is going to be “Keep Moving Forward”.  I can’t look back.  I must put one foot in front of the other and keep things from impacting LittleM as little as possible.  I can do it. Keep Moving Forward.

Crazy kid

Things have been hectic lately. Life is pushing some of my buttons that I’m not really ok with it pushing. Thank goodness for LittleM and the crazy things she says and does to help relieve the stress.

The past 2 nights when checking on LittleM we have found her in her snow pants. I don’t know why. It’s definitely not cold, and she was able to get them on backwards completely zipped up. No idea.

We’re also in the nighttime diaper free portion of childhood. About a month ago LittleM informed us that she was a big girl and would not be wearing diapers to bed anymore. Ok kid. She has done a fantastic job of making it through the night. Monday night however was a pee accident. No big deal. We have a fantastic mattress cover that doesn’t let anything through. The only problem though is Justin Bieber. LittleM is in love with and will eventually marry Justin Bieber. To prove that point she likes to sleep with 1 of the 2 Bieber dolls she owns. Unlucky for him, Justin Bieber got in the way of LittleM’s accident. You have not really lived until you have had to clean your child, the bed, and undress Justin Bieber to wash his tiny clothes in the sink too.

The weather has been ok lately too so it’s been nice doing sidewalk chalk, splashing through puddles, walking the dog, and just spending some time together in the afternoon after I pick her up from daycare.

This Thursday, Friday and Saturday is a big tradition in Delaware. The Wilmington Flower Market is happening. I have never actually been myself (not that I can remember anyway) so I think we may have to take a trip there to check it out.

If you have any tips for the flower market, I would love to hear them! Happy adventures!
